How serious is an Aortic Aneurysm?

Abnormal enlargement of the largest blood vessel of your body is generally referred as an abdominal aortic aneurysm. the abdominal aortic aneurysm is mainly due to the weakened vessels in your body that expand gradually. The bulging is seen due to the pressure of the blood flowing through the vessels in the weaker regions of the aorta.

The bulge is usually small and grows gradually as the pressure continues to increase in the weaker regions of the aorta. An aneurysm is often considered insidious due to its life-threatening complications. The abdominal aortic aneurysm is dangerous if left untreated as it can lead to internal bleeding and can lead to stroke or death in severe cases.

Bulging can occur in any artery in your body. However, the most common arteries include the brain and in the abdominal aorta. These bulges are further classified as a true aneurysm, false aneurysm or dissection.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Symptoms

In most of the cases, patients suffering from abdominal aortic aneurysm generally do not any visible symptoms, unless an aneurysm is very large in size. For most of the patients, the aortic aneurysm cases are identified incidentally while being tested for other health conditions.

The common symptoms associated with abdominal aortic aneurysm include the following:

  • Unusual sensation or feeling in the upper chest or back
  • Severe back pain
  • Chest pain is one of the common symptoms seen in aneurysm patients. A tearing or ripping pain is generally reported in the case of a large aneurysm.
  • A pulsating bulge in your abdomen
  • Feeling of fullness after having minimal food
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Blood clotting

The symptoms vary in case of rupture of an aneurysm. The signs and symptoms help in identifying that your aneurysm has ruptured. The common symptoms are seen in patients after the rupture include the following:

  • Light-headedness
  • Weakness
  • Confusion
  • Shortness of breath
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Numbness or tingling sensation
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Sweating

Complications associated with Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

The common complications seen in the case of abdominal aortic aneurysm are the tearing in one or more layers of the aorta wall or ruptured aneurysm. A ruptured aortic aneurysm can be life-threatening due to the internal bleeding. The larger the aneurysm, the greater the risk of rupture associated with it.

Other complications related to abdominal aortic aneurysm include:

  • An inflammatory aneurysm
  • Inflammation and swelling of the aneurysm wall leading to severe abdominal pain
