Blood is circulated to our body parts by means of arteries and veins. ‘Varicose veins’ is a condition which causes overfilling of blood in the veins and makes them enlarged. This develops most commonly in the veins of the leg. These veins appear reddish or dark purple in colour and they become easily visible through the skin. They become sore, painful and swell causing them to easily felt over the skin of legs. They can also cause heaviness and discomfort.
Treatment for varicose veins
If you are experiencing severe symptoms, the treatment is mainly surgical. Recent surgical techniques are minimally invasive and do not involve big surgical cuts.
Sclerotherapy is a painless and minimally invasive technique for treating varicose veins. A solution is injected directly into the affected vein which causes the problematic vein to shrink, causing blood to divert its route through healthier veins. The shrunken vein gradually heals.
Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is an excellent treatment having the
highest success rate. The doctor will confirm all your weak veins, using a Duplex Ultrasound Scan and will determine the best place to insert the catheter. Then the area will be numbed using a local anaesthetic. Once the area has become numb, a small cut is made on the skin for the catheter and a guide-wire to pass. An optical laser fiber is then passed through the catheter. The affected veins are sealed with the help of laser energy. The entire procedure is painless and approximately takes an hour.
Once you are done with the treatment, here are some Do’s and Don’ts that will help you take post-operative care.
- After sclerotherapy
Heavy lifting and strenuous exercises should be avoided at least for a week after the treatment. These activities can force the sclerosing medication out of the veins, making the treatment ineffective.
Avoid sitting or standing for long periods of time.
Do not soak the treated leg after the procedure for two days.
- After Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)
After the procedure the patients go home with a bandage and stockings placed by your surgeon. These have to be kept on for a day or two as you surgeon advice you. Bandages can be removed after two days of having the treatment after having a bath.
Later on, stockings should be worn during the day and taken off at night
While sleeping, you should keep two pillows under your feet.
You will be given some medications to avoid pain and the risk of infection. It is essential that you complete the course of these medicines.
You can start your routine activities from the next day itself.
You should avoid long hour flights for at least 2-4 weeks.
