The modern age woman is an independent decision maker and loves to choose what is best for her life. Birth control pill is yet another boon to them when it comes to choosing their pregnancy. Not just that these pills have other health benefits like treating medical conditions, managing menstrual cycles and an effective birth control tool. It is unfortunate that contraceptive pills have numerous side effects.

So it is important for women to know the long term ill effects of contraceptive pills before they choose to go for it.

Do birth control pills cause varicose veins?

Birth control pills do not directly cause varicose veins. However, it can increase the risks of forming blood clots and developing vein disease. This may contribute to varicose veins. Hormonal fluctuations are more commonly caused by birth control pills which could influence the appearance of varicose veins. Various other causative factors for varicose veins include a positive family history, sitting or standing for a long time, pregnancy, obesity, eating patterns, physical activity and many more.

Scientific evidence suggests consuming birth pills as a method of contraception, there is an increased chance of clot formation. Birth control pills reduce the levels of oestrogen and progesterone, which are responsible for causing pregnancy. When these hormonal levels change, there are various effects on the body including an increased tendency for blood clotting. This altogether increases the risk for varicose vein formation.

Let’s know how varicose veins are formed!

Blood is supplied in our body by a network of blood vessels called veins and arteries. Arteries function to supply blood to all body parts. While veins carry blood from various body parts back to the heart. A ‘varicose vein’ is caused by a dysfunction in the valves of veins causing overfilling of blood in them. It can occur in any vein of the body but more commonly affect the veins of the legs and feet. These veins appear as dark purple, wavy and are clearly visible through the skin. They may become swollen and painful causing heaviness and discomfort.

Common symptoms

Varicose veins are known to have some specific symptoms. Your legs may feel heavy, painful while standing and you will find relief after lying down. You may experience burning, throbbing or itchy sensation around these veins. These symptoms may be aggravated on sitting or standing for long hours.

In severe cases you may also see ulceration around these veins. Blood clots, bleeding, are some of the long term complications that may develop if you keep varicose veins untreated.

Ways to Reduce Risks for Varicose Veins and Blood Clots

  • Keep yourself well hydrated by having plenty of water during the day. This will prevent blood clot formation in your veins.
  • Fibrous foods like oranges and lemons are good for your body. Also go for whole wheat flour bread rather than white bread. Choosing brown rice over white rice will also help to avoid varicose veins.
  • Avoid sitting or standing for long periods of time.
  • Keep your body in good shape and exercise regularly. An everyday walk for thirty will provide your body with moderate physical activity.
  • Avoid tight clothing and high heels for daily use.

Most advanced treatment for varicose veins…

Various treatment options are available to cure varicose veins. Your doctor may choose one of the treatments depending on the condition of your veins. Endovenous Laser Treatment is one of the newest techniques of treating varicose veins.

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is an excellent technique having good success rate. Your surgeon will confirm all your weak veins, using a Duplex Ultrasound Scan and will determine the best place to insert the catheter. Then the area will be numbed using a local anaesthetic.  Once the area has become numb, a small cut is made on the skin for the catheter and a guide-wire to pass. An optical laser fibre is then passed through the catheter. The affected veins are sealed with the help of laser energy. The entire procedure is painless and approximately takes an hour. A unique feature of this technique is that is minimally invasive and has the fastest recovery time.
