Why is Treatment required for Varicose Veins?

Blood is circulated in our body by arteries and veins. ‘Varicose veins’ is a condition which affects the veins of the legs and makes them enlarged. This causes overfilling of blood in these veins. These veins appear dark purple and are clearly visible through the skin. They may become swollen and painful. They may also cause heaviness and discomfort.

Spider veins’ is also a similar condition. But the affected veins are smaller, and it is generally painless.

What can cause Varicose veins?

The following reasons may lead to varicose veins:

  • Standing for long hours
  • Obesity
  • Birth control pills
  • Heredity
  • During pregnancy
  • Trauma to lower limbs

How are Varicose veins diagnosed?

Firstly, the doctor will have a look at the visible veins of your leg while you are sitting or standing. He/she may also ask you about the painful areas of the legs. Once this has been assessed, the doctor may get an ultrasound done. It is a simple procedure where veins are viewed and blood flow in the veins is measured using high-frequency waves.

Can varicose veins be cured?

Yes. Various treatment options are available to cure Varicose veins. Your doctor may choose one of the treatments depending on the condition of your veins. Here are the some of the treatments for varicose veins:

  • Laser Ablation for varicose veins

During this treatment, a thin flexible needle-like device known as the catheter is inserted in the problematic vein. Waves are passed through the catheter which closes the vein from the inside. The treatment is done under anaesthesia and it is painless. This the gold standard treatment and requires approximately one hour, and the patient goes home the same day. The patient can resume daily activities from the next day.

  • Sclerotherapy for Varicose veins

It is a painless and minimally invasive technique for treating varicose veins and spider veins. A solution is injected directly into the vein which causes the affected vein to shrink. This forces blood to change its route through healthier veins. The shrunken vein gradually heals.
