7 Tips to Stay Healthy and Active During the Covid-19

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is essential that we all stay home and work from home. For many of us, this can lead to inactivity with prolonged sitting periods. Covid-19 is a real threat, however it does not mean that other diseases have disappeared. On the contrary, a prolonged sedentary lifestyle can have disastrous effects on your vein and circulatory health, and can especially worsen varicose veins.

Varicose veins occur when your veins become overfilled and dilated with blood. They are often painful and unattractive-looking with a bluish-purple or red colouration. A worsening of varicose veins can occur, if you are working from home during this Covid-19 lockdown and are not very mobile. So it’s important to incorporate some movement even if you have a busy or sedentary schedule. In this article, we’ll talk about the top 7 tips to remaining healthy and active despite varicose veins during this lockdown.

1)Perform frequent, small, simple exercises:

You can stay as active during the day by exercising frequently. You can walk when on the phone, do simple ankle and or heel stretches when sitting or standing, or then, walk up and down the stairs in your home. These go a long way in keeping you active, keeping your calves pumping, avoiding blood clots and generally maintaining vein health.

2)Elevate your legs:

You can elevate your legs while sleeping or sitting by using pillows or a stool. This will relieve the stress that gravity puts on your veins when standing or sitting.

3)Get out of your seat frequently:

Research has shown that sitting for long periods in the same position for long stretches of time is bad for your overall health, and especially for your vein health. Set an alarm on your smartphone or computer every 45 to 60 minutes to get up, stretch, and move around. This will increase and improve your circulation and prevent you from getting chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins.

4)Eat a healthy diet and live a healthy lifestyle:

Working from home and being near a refrigerator can result in your snacking all day and eating the wrong foods. These foods can cause weight gain and can put additional pressure on your varicose veins. You should snack on fresh fruits and veggies to satisfy those food cravings. Also, avoid salty, fried, or sugary foods, as well as excessive caffeine and alcohol. You should also avoid smoking, as this may have a negative impact on your circulation.  Doctors also recommend that you drink plenty of water, even up to 11 to 16 glasses per day.

5)Begin an at-home workout regimen:

Begin a workout activity at home for at least 30 minutes. This is good for your mind and body. It can also help you maintain a healthy weight, thereby keeping pressure off your veins. You can get creative, by doing a work-out video in your living room, dancing with a family member, or then even going for a walk or run where it is safe to do so and while observing social distancing.

6)Choose comfortable clothing:

Unless you are wearing prescribed compression stockings to reduce the chance of blood clots during periods of prolonged inactivity, you should wear loose-fitting clothing to avoid putting pressure on your veins. Also, you could go barefoot or then, wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes.

7)Consult a vascular specialist if you have a continuing problem:

Many vascular specialists are still seeing urgent patient referrals during the lockdown. Also, some doctors are using telemedicine to connect with their patients remotely. In this way, you can meet with your vascular specialist from the comfort and safety of your own home. If you have a vascular emergency, many vascular specialists will assist you in person while taking the appropriate protective measures.
