Cement stabilisation of painful spine fractures through a needle.
Osteoporotic compression fractures of the spine cause severe, movement-limiting back pain — common after minor falls in older patients. Vertebroplasty stabilises the fractured vertebra by injecting medical bone cement through a needle, under image guidance. Pain relief is often dramatic and fast.
MRI confirms which vertebra is fractured and that it is the pain source.
Under live X-ray guidance, a fine needle enters the fractured vertebra — through a skin nick, under local anesthesia.
Medical bone cement fills and internally splints the fracture, hardening within minutes.
Most patients stand and walk within hours, with immediate or rapid pain relief.
Many patients feel substantial relief within 24–72 hours; for most it is within the first week.
Bone cement has been used in orthopedics for decades. Placement under continuous imaging keeps it contained within the vertebra.
Vertebroplasty fixes the fracture, not the bone quality. We coordinate osteoporosis treatment so the next vertebra doesn't fracture.
